Who is Ian Townsend?

I am a Minerals Engineer with 45 years of experience in the mining industry.

I am UK based, but have worked globally.

My experience includes: process development; metallurgical testing; plant design; project evaluation; feasibility studies; commissioning; production management; safety; trouble shooting and process improvement; capex and opex budgeting and control; capital equipment sales; sales management; market research; general management; establishing new offices; team-building.

I have worked with unit operations including crushing, grinding, classification, flotation, thickening, filtration, roasting, leaching, solvent extraction and smelting.

I have managed study teams, metallurgical plants and international subsidiaries.

Why “Rock Art”?

I have a long association with Southern Africa.  I appreciate the art of the Khoisan people, especially at sites where I hike in the Ukhahlamba-Drakensberg Mountains.

The Khoisan lived a sustainable lifestyle, with minimal impact on their environment.  This is something that we in the mining industry should emulate.

Ore deposits are heterogenous.  Despite advances in technology, adjusting to variable feeds and process conditions is never easy.  This is where experience counts.  Processing rock is an art.
